Meanwhile, last week Aveley had the surprise news that their manager was resigning to join the team they were due to meet next. Brentwood won that encounter at Parkside though there is little to be drawn from that amidst what must have been a significant upheaval. This week The Millers have appointed a new manager in the shape of Alex Akrofi. A former player at the club, Akrofi made 134 appearances and scored 72 goals for Aveley. This will be his first match in charge and as a manager. Whether the club legend can revitalise the team by his very presence or will need time to rebuild confidence and build a new side we may see clues on Friday. We wish him well in the long run but perhaps not immediately.
Aveley are currently mid-table in the Isthmian premier division with three wins and a draw from eight games. They beat Cheshunt 4-2 at home in another Friday night game to move on to last weekend’s FA Cup defeat against Brentwood. This Friday’s game is their first in this season’s FA Trophy.
Previous Meetings
Eighty three in total of which we have won 25 and lost 37. Our first meeting was on 15th February 1958 in the Delphian League. The final score was 2-2 with our goals coming from J R Smith and Ron Potts. The majority of our meetings since then have been in search of league points under the Delphian, Athenian and Isthmian banners.
Away from league games, matches of note have been 1966’s two-legged final of the Athenian League division two cup final which we won on a 3-0 aggregate (Derek Tucker, Arnie Hubbard and Brian Stockwell); the Associate Members Trophy game at Buryfield on Trafalgar Day 1997 which Aveley won 10-9 in the highest scoring penalty shoot-out in our history (Lee Tekell and Mark Shanley with our goals in the preceding 2-2 draw); and last but not least if you’re looking for omens, our FA Trophy win of 10th November 1979, Steve Archer with the only goal of the game. That was the only other time we have been drawn against each other in the Trophy.
