The match
The first home match of the season is also our first meeting with Borough since the goalless Isthmian League encounter at Wodson Park of March 20th 2018. It will be our 83rd meeting with Borough and the clubs that have come together as part of their history. See below if you want more of their history.
Form guide
At the start of the season it’s always difficult to predict how strong a team may be. Haringey have come up after winning the Spartan South Midlands League last season. How much of that team they have managed to keep or strengthen time will tell. We do know that they scored an emphatic 5-0 FA Cup win over the Essex Senior League’s Sporting Bengal on Saturday. Their scorers were Herson Alves and Ralston Gabriel both with two goals with the fifth coming from the much travelled Jonathan Hippolyte.
We had a tough game at Biggleswade Town on Saturday coming home with a point after a 2-2 draw. We had been two up (Josh Okotcha and Theo Ofori) and conceded something of a fluke equaliser in the dying minutes but it would be hard to deny the home side their point. We would have settled for a draw before the game so I guess we can be happy with the performance against one of the favourites this season. Anthony Wordsworth, unavailable on Saturday, should be fit for this game.
Previous Meetings (or “Oh what a tangled web”)
Feel free to ignore this section. It’s here because I like this kind of delving into history but I suspect that not everyone does. Any way there have been 82 previous meetings with the the different clubs under eight different names that have come together over the decades to form the current Haringey Borough. There are two main threads leading to their formation, one starting with the famous Tufnell Park FC founded in 1907, the other with the breakway Tufnell Spartans FC (1911). Spartans went on to rename themselves as Wood Green Town (1920) and then Haringey Borough (no, not the current Haringey Borough) in 1973. Meanwhile the other thread saw Tufnell Park merge with Edmonton Borough (founded 1947) in 1950 to form the double barrelled Tufnell Park-Edmonton, renamed just Edmonton in 1960. Edmonton and the original Haringey Borough merged in 1973 to form Edmonton-Haringey before another renaming saw Haringey Borough emerge in 1976. And that was almost it except for a one-season temporary renaming to Tufnell Park. If you did, then thanks for sticking with me on that.
All together we’ve won 34 of those previous 82 meetings and lost 30, scoring 185 goals and conceding 175. In an admittedly small number of recent fixtures against them our last win was on January 18th 1986. Lol Stapleton scored twice and Paul Gillard once in match that we won by the odd goal in five.
