The important point to bear in mind is that Chesham are now playing at Step 2 whilst we are Step 4. Neither club has a good position in their respective league tables with Ware suffering what was an unexpected caning at home on Tuesday. Chesham however may say the same about theirs which has started to improve after a good win at Horsham last Saturday. Still, we knocked Hemel Hempstead out on their ground at the same stage of the competition five years ago and gave Chelmsford City a run for their money three years ago also in this round. That’s the morale boost part but, if we’re honest, Chesham will clearly start as favourites.
Previous Meetings (from Wembley to Buryfield)
Too many meetings, twenty-six, to mention individually though the first one is of note. That was on September 17th 1932 in Buckinghamshire, almost 94 years to the day before this match. It was also in the FA Cup, a preliminary round game. The 900 spectators present, being mostly home supporters, would have enjoyed the General’s 6-0 win.
There’s also the 1967/8 season in which Chesham went from the earliest round of the FA Amateur Cup to its final at Wembley. I was there to see them lose 1-0 to Leytonstone. I was also at our old Buryfield ground just three days later when we met in an Athenian League game. The Generals lost 1-0 again, Greg Myron scoring from a penalty. Strangely we had also won the away league game that season by a single goal, scored from the spot by Greg Myron.
So, twenty-six meetings of which we have won five and drawn eight. I don’t want to insult your mathematical ability but just in case you haven’t worked it out that makes thirteen wins for Chesham (half the total). I didn’t bother to add up the goals for and against, it wouldn’t have looked good for Ware.
