Ware faced Barton Rovers for the 45th meeting between the sides, 43 years on from their first encounter in 1982. The contest carried significance for both teams in the race around the playoff places, with neither likely to feature together inside the top five. The Rovers arrived three points ahead of Ware in seventh and holding a game in hand. Their away form, however, told a different story. Aside from a 4-1 victory against relegation threatened Rayners Lane, Barton had not won on the road since November 8th. Both sides entered the fixture having taken seven points from their previous five matches, setting up an evenly balanced contest.
Ware came into the match following a shock defeat to Aylesbury United, having played the second half with ten men after Sami Moutawafiq’s dismissal. Paul Halsey was therefore without the suspended midfielder, as well as injured captain Jack Grosvenor. Gucci Soulya stepped in for Moutawafiq, while three further changes saw Jay Rolfe, Josh Hutchinson and David Sota return to the starting eleven. Johnny Allotey and Gabriel Ward dropped to the bench alongside Rechan Esprit and Leigh Rose as the scene was set at Wodson Park.
Ware made the perfect start and broke the deadlock within minutes. Their first corner created immediate danger and Soulya struck a deflected effort beyond the Barton defence. Halsey’s faith in the midfielder was repaid almost instantly. The early breakthrough set the tempo for a lively opening spell.
The Blues doubled their lead soon after. Reece Beckles-Richards held the ball well on the right before Jack Taylor allowed it to run across him on the edge of the area and slipped a pass into Mayuma. The winger took one touch and fired emphatically into the far corner. Two goals ahead, Ware were enjoying one of their strongest openings in recent weeks.
Beckles-Richards remained heavily involved down the right flank, a contrast to recent matches where he had occasionally been isolated on the touchline. Half an hour in, Ware were firmly in their rhythm and the 275 supporters in attendance were witnessing some of their best football of 2026. Barton threatened shortly before the interval when a quick break forced goalkeeper Fred Burbidge into action. Back pedalling, Burbidge reacted sharply and got down well to deny the effort.
Barton introduced Connor Bernhardt at the break in place of George Joyce as the visitors searched for a response. Soulya continued his energetic display in midfield, covering ground and reinforcing Halsey’s decision to bring him into the side. On the hour mark Barton made a double change, Murphy Culkin and Joshua Clark-Anderson replaced by Ryan Neufville and Lewis Lynn. The switch brought a more traditional 4-4-2 shape as the Rovers attempted to claw their way back into the contest.
Instead, Ware extended their advantage. Hutchinson flicked the ball forward and Beckles Richards chased to keep it in play before cutting a precise pass back into the area. Soulya arrived and rifled the ball into the roof of the net. His second goal capped an outstanding performance and effectively put the game beyond Barton.
A brief period of substitutions followed. Ashton Grant made way for Jadell Brown-Bleau in Barton’s midfield, while Halsey responded by introducing Allotey and Esprit for Mayuma and Taylor. Kai Phelan later replaced Charlie Milton for the visitors, before Leigh Rose entered for Hutchinson in the closing stages. Although naturally a midfielder, Rose spent part of his career operating as a striker.
Barton did manage a late consolation. Ware failed to clear their lines and the ball fell kindly for substitute Lewis Lynn, who placed a calm finish beyond Burbidge.
The only Ware booking of the match arrived five minutes from time when referee Gerry Heron cautioned Josh Okotcha for halting a Barton attack as a cross threatened to come in from the flank. Ware remained comfortable in the closing stages. Rose won several late flick-ons to help see out the game and secure an important result.
The 3-1 victory lifts Ware above Barton Rovers on goal difference. The Blues now sit four points behind sixth placed Hertford Town and seven adrift of the playoff places, although both Hertford and fifth placed Thame United hold a game in hand
